Emblematic

Many scattered thoughts, often about Fire Emblem
A quick break from Tellius.

I always liked Gerik’s mercenaries in Sacred Stones: and I am amused that people ship these three characters in every possible combination, Gerik/Marisa, Gerik/Tethys, Marisa/Tethys, and Gerik/Marisa/Tethys. As for my preference… I don’t feel all that strongly. In the Tellius games it’s a lot easier to debate shipping, because characterisation and development is more fixed. In both Blazing Sword and Sacred Stones, there are explicitly different shipping results based on your gameplay. As such I think in those games you really do need to shrug and say, ‘Okay, whatever works for you.’ But if you’re really curious about my opinion, I will say that I personally like Marisa more than Tethys. She does more for me. (This is not my favourite picture of her: I will post that picture at some point. But not today.)

Speaking of Tellius, though, I was going to say that I always saw Gerik’s mercenaries as a prototype of the Greil Mercenaries. Gerik and Ike are both plain-spoken mercenary captains, beloved by their men. Marisa and Mia are both female swordmasters determined to become the best swordswoman in the world (even though they are amusingly complete opposites in temperament). Tethys admittedly has no counterpart. I almost see Path of Radiance as based on expanding Gerik’s mercenaries into the protagonists of an entire game. The captain is just made a bit younger, and we’re given a bigger cast of soldiers to recruit and choose from. Perhaps I’m just seeing things?
